A Protective Factor Approach to Preventing/Reducing Youth Violence and Other Health Disparities
ABOVE & BEYOND is a Columbus-based youth/school violence-prevention project, set to launch as a pilot in the Fall of 2022. We are excited about providing local youth with the protective-factor, emotional-regulation and life skills they need to positively cope with the kind of stress and trauma that can put them at risk for being a victim or perpetrator of violence. These skills will allow them to focus on living and thriving, rather than merely surviving community violence.
By connecting young people with caring / non-judgmental adult allies, both online (technology) and offline (human-ology) we can foster a sense of hope, care, and respect.
hope
Belief that things can get better, and life is worth living. Having a vision for where you want
to go in life and a plan for how to get there.
care
Understanding and engaging in self-care customs and rituals. (Breathing exercises,
Emotion regulation, Journaling, Prayer, Meditation, Art, Sports, Exercise, Volunteerism, etc.)
respect
Recognizing the value of yourself and others (Sawubona - "I see you"). If I recognize my own
value and the value of someone else, I’m far less likely to do harm to myself or to them.
Columbus MBK Village is built on the foundation of navigating community institutions, identified as pillars, to build on established relationships and expand reach for Boys and Young Men of Color. In addition, MBK Village role supporting the Above and Beyond Campaign is to engage, educate, empower and expand services to girls and young women of color.
If you provide one of the 3Ps, connect the youth in your program, or in an institutional or nonprofit setting, to a positive, skills-building and culturally specific experience. Attend one of our Chat & Chews and fill out the organizational contact form below in order to bring ABOVE & BEYOND’s strength-based, trauma-informed package to your institutional or non-profit provider setting.
